Akufo-Addo Calls John Mahama to Console Him as Omane Boamah, Murtala Mohammed, Die In Plane Crash

Ghana's former president, Akufo-Addo, has commiserated with John Dramani Mahama after the loss of three military officers and five government officials in the Ashanti region.

The eight Ghanaians died after a helicopter transporting them to a national event crashed in the Adansi Akrofuom District.

The fatalities included Dr Edward Omane Boamah, Minister for Defence, Dr Alhaji Murtala Muhammed, MP for Tamale Central and Minister for Environment, Science & Technology, Alhaji Muniru Mohammed – Acting Deputy National Security Coordinator, Dr. Samuel Sarpong (Vice Chairman of the NDC), and Samuel Aboagye – Former Parliamentary Candidate, Sqn. Leader Peter Bafemi Anala, Flying Officer, Twum Ampadu and Sgt. Ernest Addo Mensah.

The politicians were top executives of John Dramani Mahama's National Democratic Congress and close pals of the president.

Ghana's Minister of Education, Haruna Iddrisu, in reaction to the deaths, said that the president had "broken down" after hearing the tragic news.

In a social media post, Akufo-Addo noted that he had called John Mahama to console him.

"I have spoken and extended my deepest condolences to the President of the Republic, H.E. John Dramani Mahama and to Mr. Johnson Asiedu Nketiah, Chairman of the NDC. I condole with our gallant men of the Ghana Air Force at this concerning time and salute their indispensable role in the public life of our country, and extend further my condolences to the bereaved families. May they find peaceful rest in the Bosom of the Almighty, until the Last Day of the Resurrection, when we shall all meet again," the former president said.

Dr Omane Boamah, others flown to Accra

A powerful delegation led by the Chief of Staff, Julius Debrah, has received the mortal remains of the eight persons who perished in the Ghana Armed Forces plane crash.

The remains of Dr Omane Boamah, Murtala Mohammed and the six others were flown back to Accra on another Ghana Armed Forces (GAF) helicopter.

In a footage sighted by YEN.com.gh, some military officers were spotted carrying eight coffins draped with the Ghana flag, which contained the remains of the men who died while serving the nation.

They were later transported to the morgue by the hearse, awaiting final burial or funeral arrangements.

According to a CitiNews reporter, some rituals were performed before the bodies were finally conveyed to the national capital.

Forensics would be conducted before the bereaved families can have access to their relatives for burial.

Bawumia mourns Obuasi crash victims

Earlier, YEN.com.gh reported that the former Vice President, Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, has extended his condolences following the tragic helicopter crash in the Adansi Akrofuom District of the Ashanti Region that killed eight people.

In his message to Ghanaians as the nation mourns, Bawumia noted that the deceased victims paid the ultimate price in service to Ghana.
