The Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO) has identified several vehicle brands, specifically Honda CR-Vs, Ford F-150 pickups, Range Rovers, and Dodge models, as the primary subjects in its latest initiative targeting stolen cars shipped into Ghana.

This operation came in response to growing concerns, as Interpol has labelled Ghana a lucrative hub for vehicles stolen predominantly from Canada and the United States.

EOCO's investigations disclosed that these four vehicle models constitute the majority of cases intercepted in recent months, indicating a significant trend in the local market.

Speaking on the television program Upfront with Blessed Sogah, Leo Anthony Siamah, the Head of EOCO’s Legal Unit, emphasised the importance of vigilance among potential buyers when considering these models.

"There are some car models that create mistrust. The Ford F-150, Range Rover, Dodge Ram, and Honda CR-V series, for example, are the most often recovered stolen automobiles. This should definitely give you cause for concern if you intend to buy one of these cars."

Mr. Siamah also warned prospective car buyers to be particularly cautious when dealing with vehicles that appear "too new and accident-free" in the Ghanaian market, specifically highlighting models from 2023 and 2024.

He pointed out that while the local market typically includes salvaged or accident-damaged vehicles, the sudden influx of pristine newer models warrants additional scrutiny.

"If you find a car, say a 2023 or 2024 model, that is in perfect condition and has never been in an accident, this should tell you to look into it more, maybe calling Interpol to see if it has been reported stolen," he said.

Importantly, although Honda CR-Vs and Range Rovers are at the forefront of EOCO's concerns, Siamah clarified that their operations encompass a wider array of models.

“For example, would we go for a Toyota Corolla? Of course. Additionally, we have taken action against some Honda Accords and Toyota Highlanders. We don't limit ourselves to a select few companies," he explained.
