It is not clear how MTN Mobile Money will implement this.

However, information about each network subscriber is available to MTN due to the SIM registration exercise conducted some years ago.

Samuel Duku explained that the loan defaulters would not be creditworthy, hence they would not be able to access any loans.

BoG cautions MoMo defaulters

The Bank of Ghana, in 2022, issued a statement advising mobile money loan defaulters to repay their debts.

The Central Bank warned that defaulters risk facing stiffer consequences, which could deny them access to future credit facilities.

The BoG stated that individuals who intentionally choose not to repay their loans will face negative repercussions on their credit reports and history.

“The Bank of Ghana wishes to inform the general public that data on all mobile money loan customers are held in the databases of credit bureaus.
As a result, failure to repay such loans will attract negative repercussions on borrowers’ credit reports/history and could subsequently affect their chances of obtaining loan facilities from other financial institutions and credit providers in the future.”
