The statute was described as suffering irreparable damage at the time.

The life-sized bronze statue, unveiled in November 2024 to honour the president, was reportedly vandalised overnight.

Videos from the scene showed the statue’s head severed and lying on the ground. There was also significant damage to the pedestal.

When was the statue unveiled?

The statue was unveiled on November 6, 2024, when then-president Akufo-Addo was on a tour of the Western Region. It was heavily criticised by opposition figures.

At the time, the Western Regional Minister, Kwabena Okyere Darko Mensah, said the statue honoured Akufo-Addo’s regional development initiatives.

Unknown persons first vandalised the statue on December 16, 2024, after the New Patriotic Party lost the 2024 election.
