The Western Regional Minister, Joseph Nelson, officially announced the tragic death of Flying Officer Twum Ampadu, one of eight individuals who lost their lives in a helicopter crash on Wednesday, August 6, 2025, to his wife.

Before his death, Flying Officer Ampadu was stationed at the Takoradi Air Force Base.

His wife, Lieutenant Ewuradwoa Kumi-Kyeremeh, serves as a psychologist at the 2nd Garrison of the Western Naval Command in Sekondi.

The atmosphere was sombre as Lieutenant Kumi-Kyeremeh received the heartbreaking news of her husband's passing in the crashed Ghana Air Force Z-9 helicopter at Adansi Akrofuon near Obuasi in the Ashanti Region.

Nelson paid a condolence visit, offering words of comfort to her and the commanding officers at the Western Naval Command during this incredibly difficult time.

All three crew members involved in the crash were from the Takoradi Air Force Base.

"It’s unimaginable what they must be feeling. For us, it’s hard to express the pain of seeing our sister in this state. The families of Dr. Omane Boama, Mutala Mohammad, and Dr. Sarpong are all grieving. You serve your nation expecting to return, but today has been heartbreaking."

Flag Officer Commanding the Western Naval Command, Samuel Agalezano, who welcomed the Minister and his delegation, described the day as a solemn Wednesday.

"It has been a sombre day for Ghana, and this Garrison is no exception. The news was devastating, and I know we all share this sentiment. Our sister is understandably distraught, and we are doing our best to offer her comfort."

Mahama was scheduled to be on Z-9 helicopter that crashed

YEN.com.gh reported that Nana Yaa Jantuah, a senior presidential staffer, disclosed that President John Dramani Mahama was initially scheduled to be on the doomed chopper.

The devastating accident, which occurred on Wednesday, August 6, 2025, claimed the lives of five government officials, including two Ministers of State, and three military personnel.
