IGP Promotes 2 Officers For Heroic Rescue, Arrest Of Robbery Suspects

The Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Christian Tetteh Yohuno, has promoted two police officers after they rescued two robbery victims.

The officers also apprehended seven suspects during an operation in the Greater Accra and Eastern regions.

The first promoted officer was Chief Inspector Patience Kotoka, stationed at the Anyaa District Police Command.

She has been recommended for the next Police Cadet Course at the Police Academy to be commissioned into the Senior Officer Corps upon successful completion.

The second officer was Constable Joseph Akondoh, also from the same command, who had been elevated to the rank of Lance Corporal. They were promoted during a ceremony on August 8.

GNA reported that the promotions followed an operation on August 7, 2025, at Ablekuma Borkorborkor.

The two officers, supported by four Community Police Assistants intercepted a car during a snap check at about 12:30 a.m.

Two passengers in the vehicle leapt from its open bucket and called for help, informing the officers they had been attacked the previous night during a robbery involving their 5,400-litre fuel tanker near Nsawam.

The officers swiftly rescued the victims and arrested one suspect at the scene.

Follow-up intelligence-led operations in the Eastern Region resulted in the arrest of six additional suspects and the recovery of the stolen fuel tanker along with other exhibits.

Police crush robbery plot in Accra

In July, the Ghana Police Service successfully crushed a planned robbery in Accra following an intelligence-led operation by the Police Intelligence Directorate (PID) Headquarters.

The statement said that during the operation on Monday, July 15, 2025, the suspects detected police surveillance while en route to their target location in a Toyota Yaris vehicle.

They opened fire on the police team, shooting one officer and prompting the team to return fire.

Police foil suspected assassination attempt in Tema

Also in July, police in Tema stopped a killing at the Tema General Hospital after a gunman was purportedly prevented from finishing off persons he had wounded earlier at Ashaiman Tulaku.

The incident, which occurred on July 24, saw the attacker drop an assault rifle when fleeing from police.

The Chronicle reported that the chain of events started on the evening of July 23, when a gunman opened fire on some men at Ashaiman Tulaku, killing one and injuring three.

Police foil GH¢1.3 million gold robbery

YEN.com.gh reported that police busted three suspects who had planned to rob a gold consignment valued at over GH¢1.3 million.

The suspects were identified as Adams Zibo, Massawud Yussif and Kenneth Khartey.

Police said its Special Support Unit (SSU) commenced the operation on Wednesday, June 25, 2025, following indications that a gold dealer’s driver and a man posing as his bodyguard had conspired to rob a scheduled gold delivery the following day.
