The queenmother of the Asante kingdom, Nana Konadu Yiadom III, was confirmed to have died during a meeting of the Asanteman council at Manhyia on Monday, August 11, 2025.

She was the 14th Asantehemaa and the biological sister of the current Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II.

Nana Yiadom III had been appointed to the position of Asantehemaa on February 6, 2017, taking over from the late Nana Afia Kobi Serwaa Ampem II.

She had marked her eighth year of reign in February.

Nana Konadu Yiadom was 98 years old at the time of her death.

Otumfuo announces Asantehemaa’s death

In a video seen by YEN.com.gh, the Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, announced the death of his elder sister.

Rumours of the tragedy circulated on social media last week but was not confirmed by the palace, who refused any public comment.

Following the rumours, the Asantehene convened a meeting of the Asanteman Council, during which he was expected to officially confirm or deny the news.

Whilst announcing the news of his sister's death, Otumfuo looked overwhelmed with emotion and saddened at the tragedy.

He dabbed at his eyes a few times, appearing to wipe away tears.

The Asantehemaa's death sparked mourning across the entire Asanteman, with many people in the palace and other areas weeping over the loss to the Kingdom.

According to reports, Nana Konadu Yiadom III was born in 1927 at Benyaade Shrine at Merdan, in Kwadaso, Kumasi during the days of the restoration of the Ashanti confederacy.

She was born to Nana Afia Kobi Serwaa Ampem II, who was also an Asantehemaa who reigned from 1977 to 2016.

Her father, Opanin Kofi Fofie, known popularly as Koofie or Keewuo, was a carpenter by profession from Besease near Atimatim in Kumasi.

She was raised by her aunt, Nana Afia Konadu, at Ashanti New Town.

She was married to one Opanin Kwame Boateng, a blacksmith from Aduman in Kumasi.
