Fuel Tanker Crashes Into Market in Oti Region Killing 4, Including 1-Year-Old: "A Very Sad Day"

Four people were reported dead, with 14 others injured, after a fuel tanker ran into a crowd at a market in Asukawkaw in the Krachi East Municipality of the Oti Region.

A one-year-old girl was among the dead, according to reports from the ground on August 14.

The unfortunate incident occurred on Thursday, August 14, 2025.

“It is a very sad day for our community. The victims were market women going about their normal activities when the tanker hit them. We have lost three women and a girl, believed to be about one year old. Fourteen others have sustained various injuries."

The Assembly Member for the Asukawkaw Electoral Area, Mark Oduro, told Adom News that three women were also killed.

The victims were conducting their business when the tanker driver lost control of the vehicle and crashed into them.

Police in the Katanga District have arrested the driver to assist with investigations.

The bodies of the deceased have been conveyed to the Worawora Government Hospital morgue, while the injured are receiving treatment at nearby health facilities.

Recent 2025 road crashes in Ghana

Most recently, two of the Saviour Church of Ghana's head pastor's children were among the dead in the tragic road crash on July 28 that claimed 15 lives.

The crash on the Juaso-Nkawkaw stretch of the Accra-Kumasi highway also left four others wounded after a vehicle collided with a tanker.

The crash involved a collision between the vehicle carrying the church members and a truck transporting fuel.

Reports from eyewitnesses indicate that a tyre on the tanker burst, causing the vehicle to swerve off its lane and crash into the church members' vehicle.

On July 16, four people were left in a critical condition following a road crash at Senya Bonsuoku in the Central Region.

The July 15 road crash also left 15 other passengers injured.

On July 9, a crash in Adanwomaso in the Kwabre East Municipality of the Ashanti Region claimed three lives, including two police officers.

Adom News noted that the crash involved a bullion van and a truck carrying bags of cement.

Four of the victims, including two police officers, were on board the bullion van in which only the driver survived.

On June 25, a collision between a VIP bus and a cargo truck on the Accra-Kumasi Highway claimed several lives and left dozens hospitalised.

The accident occurred near Oframase, close to Nkawkaw in the Kwahu West Municipality. The bus collided with an oncoming cargo truck loaded with flour.

Increase in Ghana's road crashes in 2025

YEN.com.gh also previously reported that road crashes had increased year on year in 2025, according to the National Road Safety Authority.

Ghana recorded 7,289 road crashes and 1,504 fatalities between January and June 2025, compared to 1,237 deaths in the first half of 2024.

According to the data, 12,354 vehicles were involved in crashes, which resulted in 8,300 non-fatal casualties, with 1,301 pedestrians involved.
