Chairman Wontumi: Trotro Driver Claims NPP Executives Shared Money at EOCO, Flaunts His in Video

A trotro driver who found himself at the premises of the Economic and Organised Crime Office on Thursday afternoon, May 29, 2025, opened up about his mission.

In a video, he admitted that he was not there to support Chairman Wontumi. He confessed to being clueless about the happenings at EOCO and stated that he was there for money.

According to him, a party executive shared money at the premises on the first day of Chairman Wontumi's arrest, and that's what pushed him to show up at the premises again.

Speaking to JoyNews, he flaunted the cedi notes and claimed he received GH¢1,300 that day.

"I don't have any idea what's going on here. I'm a trotro driver. That's my car parked over there. Last three days, they shared money. I'm waiting for the money again. I was standing in front of him, so I got a lot," he said.

Chairman Wontumi's arrest by EOCO

On May 27, 2025, the Ashanti Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Bernard Antwi-Boasiako, was arrested and detained by the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO).

Reports suggested that the arrest of the NPP's Ashanti Regional Chairman was in connection with the alleged $55 million Akonta Mining fraud case.

This is after heavily armed National Security operatives stormed Wontumi's residence in Kumasi on Friday, 23 May 2025, to execute a search warrant.

However, the NIB operatives were unsuccessful, as leaders of the NPP and supporters in the Ashanti Region reportedly impeded their attempt.

Netizens who saw the video of the commercial bus driver speaking about the party members distributing money expressed mixed reactions in the comment section. While some were amused, others called out the government.

Bawumia breaks silence on Chairman Wontumi's arrest

Earlier, YEN.com.gh reported that former Vice President, Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, raised concerns over the arrest and detention of Chairman Wontumi.

Dr Bawumia called for strict adherence to constitutional rights and due process amid unclear charges and unknown whereabouts.
