Okatakyie replies to Wode Maya over Asante history

Okatakyie Afrifa-Mensah, speaking on his show For The Records on Monday, June 30, gave a fiery response to Wode Maya regarding comments made about him.

First, he clarified that earning revenue from social media was not a venture that he was interested in; hence, he would not reach out to Wode Maya in that regard.

He also indicated that he was not envious of Wode Maya's line of work, as he could have chosen to be a travel vlogger if that was something he preferred.

Okatakyie said he took issue with Wode Maya for making a baseless claim in one of his vlogs, where he stated that the Asantes were engaged in the slave trade business.

He added that it is a fabrication for anyone to claim that the Asantes were selling slaves at the Salaga Market.

Wode Maya's comments about slavery

Wode Maya, in January 2025, posted a video on his TikTok page where he and two other individuals were reflecting on the impact of the slave trade.

It was at this point that the famed content creator made an audacious claim, saying the Ashantis were the ones who sold slaves captured from the northern part of Ghana to be shipped off to the Caribbean.

"I think it makes sense that when we talk about slavery, it is only the Ashantis who were taken to the Caribbean. It was rather the Ashantis who were capturing people from the north of Ghana," he said in the video.
