Don't hide under the guise of marriage to secure citizenship

YEN.com.gh reached out to a Ghanaian immigration lawyer in the US, Akua Aboagye, for her expert opinion on the legal aspect of an issue like this.

She explained that in a country like the United States, securing citizenship through marriage with a US national is fairly easy as compared to using other means.

"Getting married to a US citizen as an immigrant is one of the quickest ways to becoming a green card holder and eventually a US citizen. Other routes such as a US citizen filing for his brother or sister) may take as long as fifteen years. Getting a green card through marriage may take as little as one year"

Lawyer Poku, however, warned against marrying a US citizen under the guise of love, only to divorce them once you become a US citizen.

She revealed that in some cases the victims or their relatives take the law into their hands and react to the betrayal.

"In the US, this is a type of marriage fraud and a felony offence: where a foreign national defrauds a U.S. citizen who believes the marriage is legitimate.
Needless to say, this type of situation causes a lot of pain and disaffection which can lead to disastrous consequences. People are shot and stabbed over these types of situations. Sometimes the revenge is not even taken by the victims of the marriage fraud but by their family members who see the suffering and the pain their loved ones go through. If you cause someone pain in such a manner then you have to be ready for the consequences. she told YEN.com.gh
