NPP Gears Up for Akwatia By-Election, General Secretary Assures Party Supporters of Victory

The General Secretary of the opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP), Justin Kodua Frimpong, has indicated the party's preparedness to contest the forthcoming Akwatia parliamentary by-election.
Speaking at a press conference held on Tuesday, July 29, 2025, Mr Frimpong stated that the NPP has done its background work and is fully poised to face off against the ruling National Democratic Congress (NDC) in the by-election slated for September 2, 2025.

"On Friday, July 25, 2025, the National Council held a meeting, and one of the issues that came up was the Akwatia by-election. I can assure you that the New Patriotic Party is ready and will fully participate in the by-election," he said.
Justin Kodua Frimpong said that on Friday, July 25, 2025, the National Council held a meeting, during which the Akwatia by-election was discussed.
He explained that the National Council had set up a committee called the Akwatia Elections Committee, chaired by the regional chairman and regional secretary.
He added that respected Members of Parliament, including Okyere Baafi, Abena Osei Asare, Kennedy Osei Nyarko, as well as Mr Kodua, a former MCE for Akwatia, were included in the committee.
According to him, the committee reached out to potential aspirants interested in contesting the Akwatia by-election on the NPP ticket.
After consensus, deliberations and discussions, they agreed on one candidate, which is why no parliamentary primary was held in Akwatia.
"A committee, referred to as the Akwatia Elections Committee, was set up by the National Council and is chaired by the regional chairman and regional secretary. We also included some respected Members of Parliament; Okyere Baafi, Abena Osei Asare, Kennedy Osei Nyarko, along with Mr Kodua, a former MCE for Akwatia," he stated.

"Their task was to assess and identify the most suitable candidate for the Akwatia by-election. They engaged potential aspirants who had shown interest in contesting on the NPP ticket and, through consensus and extensive discussions, agreed on a single candidate. That is why no parliamentary primaries were held in Akwatia," he added.
The NPP General Secretary further commended members of the Akwatia Election Committee for the yeoman's job they did in selecting a candidate for the by-election.

What necessitated the Akwatia by-election?
The Akwatia by-election became necessary after the death of the former MP, Enerst yaw Kumi.
Ernest Kumi, who was a first-time MP, died on July 7, 2025, at age 40, after a short illness.
The NPP has endorsed Solomon Kwame Asumadu as its parliamentary candidate for the upcoming Akwatia by-election without a primary process.
Mr Asumadu is the Chief Executive Officer of Owuo Mining Company in the Eastern Region of Ghana.

NDC prepares for Akwatia by-election
Earlier, YEN.com.gh reported that on the National Democratic Congress (NDC) side, three aspirants picked up nomination forms to contest in the party's primary for the Akwatia by-election.
The three included former Members of Parliament: Henry Boakye, Bernard Bediako Baidoo, who was also the NDC Akwatia Constituency Secretary, and Erasmus Koney Ali.
According to the party’s outlined timetable, aspirants who submitted their nominations before the Wednesday, July 30 deadline were vetted on Thursday, July 31.
Balloting followed immediately to determine positions ahead of the primaries, which were scheduled for Monday, August 4, 2025.
