Electoral Commission To Hold Akwatia By-Election On September 2

The Electoral Commission will hold the Akwatia by-election on September 2, 2025, following the passing of the sitting Member of Parliament, Ernest Kumi.

A statement from the commission affirmed that the seat has become vacant in line with Article 112(5) of the 1992 Constitution, necessitating a by-election.

Nomination forms will be received from prospective candidates from Monday, August 11, to Wednesday, August 13, 2025, at the Denkyembour District Office of the commission.

Submissions will be accepted between 9:00 a.m. and 12:00 p.m., and from 2:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. daily.

The filing fee has been set at GH¢10,000 per candidate, with a reduced fee of GH¢7,500 for female aspirants and persons with disabilities (PWDs).

The Electoral Commission urged all stakeholders to adhere to the timelines and requirements, reaffirming its commitment to conducting a transparent, fair, and credible by-election.

When did Akwatia MP Ernest Kumi die?

Kumi died aged 40 on July 7, reportedly after experiencing some health issues.

The MP reportedly passed on at LEKMA Hospital in Accra after a short illness.

Shortly before his death, he managed to overturn a conviction for contempt related to the disputed 2024 parliamentary election results.

Kumi was in Parliament on the ticket of the New Patriotic Party.

Kumi was born in 1984 in Akyem Wenchi in Ghana and studied at the Regional Maritime University and earned a Bachelor of Science in Ports and Shipping Administration in 2009.

He later pursued a Master of Business Administration in Corporate Governance at the University of Professional Studies in 2014.

In 2019, he obtained a Bachelor of Laws (LLB) from Mountcrest University College. He also completed a Master of Science in Defence and International Politics from the Ghana Armed Forces Command and Staff College in 2022.

NPP chooses candidate for Akwatia by-election

The New Patriotic Party has chosen Solomon Kwame Asumadu to be its candidate in Akwatia.

According to the NPP, the decision to choose Asumadu was made after consulting with stakeholders.

During the consultations, a proposal to hold primaries was rejected in favour of a consensus approach.

On the National Democratic Congress side of the fence, three aspirants have picked up nomination forms to contest a primary to be the Akwatia parliamentary candidate.

The three are former Members of Parliament: Henry Boakye, the current NDC Akwatia Constituency Secretary, Bernard Bediako Baidoo, and Erasmus Koney Ali.

NPP confident of victory in Akwatia by-election

YEN.com.gh reported that the General Secretary of the NPP, Justin Kodua Frimpong, said his party was ready for the Akwatia parliamentary by-election.

Speaking at a press conference held on Tuesday, July 29, 2025, Frimpong assured that the NPP has done its background work and is fully poised to face off against the NDC.
