A Ghana Army Z-9 helicopter was involved in a fatal crash at Adansi Akrofum in the Ashanti Region on Wednesday, August 6, 2025.

The unfortunate incident has claimed the lives of three crew members and five passengers, including the Minister of Defence, Dr Edward Omane Boamah, and the Minister for Environment, Science, and Technology, Ibrahim Murtala Muhammed.
The deceased were on a trip to the launch of the Responsible Cooperative Mining and Skills Development Programme (rCOMSDEP) in Obuasi, Ashanti Region, before the unfortunate crash occurred in the morning.

Following the unfortunate incident, an eyewitness who was seen on the scene gave an account of the events that led to the tragic helicopter crash in an interview with Kumasi-based radio station Otec 102.9 FM.
According to the individual, he and others discovered six bodies after arriving at the scene. He noted that some personnel from the Ghanaian military, the Local Assembly Member for Sikaman, and the Ashanti Regional Minister, Dr Frank Amoakohene, had arrived at the crash scene to assess the situation.
He said:
"We were able to identify six bodies. The soldiers are currently on the crash scene. As I am speaking with you now, I know the Assembly member in the Sikaman area is there. The Police Inspector is also there."
"I have seen the Ashanti Regional Minister on his way there. All the security personnel in the Adansi Akrofrom district Assembly have all rushed here."
He shared that the Z-9 helicopter lost its balance as it hit a tree and a mountain before going down in flames in the thick forest in Adansi Akrofum.

The eyewitness also shared that nobody survived the unfortunate helicopter crash. He added that the deceased were burnt beyond recognition.
He said:
"The helicopter hit a tree. When it happened, the tree fell, and it went on to crash into the mountain. It (the helicopter) landed on the ground right after it crashed into the mountain."
"Everything is burnt. No one survived. You can't even take anything from the crash site home. You can't even identify their remains."

Government officials mourn at the Jubilee House
Earlier, YEN.com.gh reported that government officials mourned at the Jubilee House after the Ghana Armed Forces confirmed the helicopter crash.
Footage showed the high-ranking members of the NDC administration with a sad look on their faces as the Chief of Staff, Julius Debrah, prepared to announce the demise of the eight victims.
The scenes from the Jubilee House evoked sad reactions from Ghanaians on social media, who mourned.
