The Ghanaian government has declared three days of national mourning in response to a devastating helicopter crash that occurred on Wednesday, August 8, 2025.
The tragic accident claimed the lives of eight prominent individuals, including Defence Minister Dr. Edward Omane Boamah and Minister for Environment, Science, Technology, and Innovation, Ibrahim Murtala Muhammed.

A statement issued on Thursday, August 7, 2025, by the Minister of State in charge of Government Communication, Felix Kwakye Ofosu, stated that the activities will commence with the laying of flowers and lighting of candles.

This act of remembrance, according to the Minister, will take place at the Ceremonial Garden in front of the Jubilee House at 1:00 PM on Thursday.
According to the statement, the laying of flowers and candle lighting will continue on Friday, August 8, 2025, to allow more time for citizens to express their condolences and respect.
The three days of national mourning will end on Saturday, August 9, 2025, with an event dubbed "Evening of Reflections and Memorials," which will be held at 5:00 PM at the forecourt of the State House in Accra.
"This solemn period is dedicated to honouring the departed and providing an opportunity for national reflection and remembrance," the statement read.
"These three days offer our nation a vital opportunity to collectively mourn and reflect on the profound loss we have experienced. We urge all citizens to observe the period of national mourning with dignity and respect," it added.

The crash took place in the Adansi Akrofuom district while the Ghana Armed Forces Z-9 helicopter was on its way to Obuasi.
Authorities are currently investigating the cause of the incident.
The five civilians who lost their lives in the crash have been identified as Defence Minister, Dr Edward Omane Boamah, Minister for Environment, Science, Technology and Innovation, Dr Ibrahim Murtala Mohammed, Deputy National Security Coordinator Limuna Muniru, former Ashanti Regional Minister Dr. Samuel Sarpong, and former Obuasi East Parliamentary candidate Samuel Aboagye.
The military personnel involved in the crash were Squadron Leader Peter Bafemi Anala, Flying Officer Manin Twum-Ampadu, and Sergeant Ernest Addo Mensah.

Meanwhile, YEN.com.gh reported that the General Superintendent of the Assemblies of God, Ghana, Rev. Dr. Stephen Y. Wengam, left many puzzled after he reacted to the helicopter crash that claimed the lives of eight people on Wednesday, August 6.
Dr. Stephen Y. Wengam, while ministering to his church congregants, said he was initially informed by the Executive Secretary to the President that John Mahama would not attend the Assemblies of God event, dubbed the 1st National Pastors and Spouses Retreat, at the Pentecost Convention Centre.
Rev. Dr. Stephen Y. Wengam said the decision by the President not to attend the event did not sit well with the First Lady, who insisted that they would attend the Assemblies of God event that had been scheduled for August 6, 2025.
