The Ashanti Regional Minister, Dr Frank Amoakohene, has announced the retrieval of the Black Box belonging to the Ghana Armed Forces Z-9 helicopter involved in the tragic crash near Obuasi on Wednesday, August 6, 2025.

The Minister, who was among the individuals who rushed to the scene after the unfortunate incident, announced the latest development on Facebook on Thursday, August 7, 2025.
The black box, a device that will help officials determine the cause of the aviation tragedy, is currently in the possession of the authorities after its successful retrieval from the mountain where the unfortunate crash occurred.

According to the Associated Press (AP), the black box, which has a bright orange colour, comprises a Flight Data Recorder (FDR) and the Cockpit Voice Recorder (CVR) records essential information, including the final moments before a plane crash, which would help the authorities with their investigations.
The retrieval of the Z-9 helicopter's black box came the same day as personnel from the Ghana Armed Forces visited the Sikaman Forest in the Adansi South District in the Ashanti Region, a day after the tragic accident.
The Ghana Armed Forces also announced that they have begun an investigation into the tragic incident, with President John Dramani Mahama also setting up an investigative board of enquiry to look into the tragedy.
Regional Minister shares details about helicopter crash
Dr Amoakohene also announced that he and other officials had formally visited the families of Dr Samuel Sarpong and Samuel Aboagye to commiserate with them following their demise in the tragic helicopter crash.

The Regional Minister shared that the Ashanti Regional Coordinating Council had opened the book of condolences, which will be open to dignitaries to visit the residences to mourn the loss of the helicopter crash victims.

Obuasi helicopter crash claims eight lives
The country was sent into a state of mourning after the Ghana Armed Forces' Z-9 helicopter was involved in a crash that claimed eight lives at the Sikaman Forest in the Adansi South District.

Among the victims were two cabinet ministers, Dr Edward Omane Boamah and Dr Ibrahim Murtala Muhammed.
Other top political officials, including the Deputy National Security Coordinator, Limuna Muniru, a Vice Chairman of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Dr Samuel Sarpong, and the Deputy Director General in Charge of Relief and Protocol at NADMO, Samuel Aboagye, also died in the crash.
Three military officers, Sergeant Ernest Addo Mensah, Squadron Leader Peter Bafemi Anala, and Flying Officer Manin Twum-Ampadu, were also victims of the unfortunate helicopter crash.

The eight individuals were attending the official launch of the Responsible Cooperative Mining and Skills Development Programme (rCOMSDEP) in Obuasi before they perished in the accident.
Obuasi crash victims flown to South Africa
In another reported by YEN.com.gh, the remains of the helicopter crash victims were flown to South Africa for DNA analysis on August 7, 2025.
Businessman Ibrahim Mahama and other top NDC officials were present to carry out final preparations before the private jet took off for the trip.
The footage from the transportation of the crash victims' remains to South Africa evoked sadness among many Ghanaians on social media.
