Ghana Helicopter Crash: President Mahama to Address the Nation at 9PM

President John Dramani Mahama is set to address the nation tonight at 9 PM, following the tragic helicopter crash that occurred on Wednesday, August 8, 2025.

This was disclosed by Interior Minister, Mohammed Muntaka Mubarak, who has been assigned additional responsibility for National Security by President Mahama.

The tragic incident, which took place in the Adansi Akrofuom District of the Ashanti Region, claimed the lives of eight prominent statesmen, including the Defence Minister, Dr. Edward Omane Boamah, and the Minister for Environment, Science, Technology, and Innovation, Ibrahim Murtala Muhammed.

The helicopter crash occurred en route to a programme aimed at combating illegal mining.

Other prominent Ghanaians who died helicopter crash

Three other prominent Ghanaians who lost their lives in the crash have been identified Deputy National Security Coordinator Limuna Muniru, former Ashanti Regional Minister Dr. Samuel Sarpong, and former Obuasi East Parliamentary candidate for the 2024 election, Samuel Aboagye.

The military personnel involved in the crash were Squadron Leader Peter Bafemi Anala, Flying Officer Manin Twum-Ampadu, and Sergeant Ernest Addo Mensah.

President Mahama declares three days of mourning

Meanwhile, the government has announced three days of national mourning following the tragic helicopter crash on August 8, 2025.

A statement released on Thursday, August 7, 2025, by Felix Kwakye Ofosu, the Minister of State in charge of Government Communication, stated that the mourning will begin with the laying of flowers and the lighting of candles.

This act of remembrance will take place at the Ceremonial Garden in front of the Jubilee House at 1:00 PM on Thursday.

The statement also noted that the flower-laying and candle lighting will continue on Friday, August 8, 2025, giving citizens additional time to pay their respects.

The three days of mourning will conclude on Saturday, August 9, 2025, with a special "Evening of Reflections and Memorials" event, scheduled for 5:00 PM at the forecourt of the State House in Accra.

Minister announces retrieveal of GAF Z-9’s black box

Earlier, YEN.com.gh reported that the The Ashanti Regional Minister, Dr. Frank Amoakohene, announced the retrieval of the Black Box belonging to the Ghana Armed Forces Z-9 helicopter involved in the tragic crash near Obuasi on Wednesday, August 6, 2025.

The Minister, who had rushed to the scene after the unfortunate incident, shared the latest development on Facebook on Thursday, August 7, 2025.

Dr. Frank Amoakohene also disclosed that he and other officials had formally visited the families of Dr. Samuel Sarpong and Samuel Aboagye to offer their condolences following their deaths in the tragic helicopter crash.

He mentioned that the Ashanti Regional Coordinating Council had opened the Book of Condolences for dignitaries to mourn the loss of the crash victims.
