Ghana's former Vice President, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, has paid a heartfelt visit to the residence of the late Dr. Ibrahim Murtala Mohammed (MP), Minister for Environment, Science, and Technology.

Accompanied by other New Patriotic Party (NPP) MPs and former parliamentary candidates, Dr. Bawumia expressed his heartfelt sympathies and condolences to the late Minister of State's family.

A video of the visit circulating on social media showed the former Vice President signing the book of condolence to pay tribute to the departed leader.

The visit underscores the high regard in which the late minister was held by his colleagues and peers.

Dr. Bawumia's presence at the residence demonstrates the NPP's respect for the minister's contributions to the country's development.

The nation continues to mourn the loss of Dr. Mohammed, who tragically lost his life in a helicopter crash alongside other prominent government officials.

Dr Ibrahim Murtala Mohammed was also the MP for Tamale Central on the ticket of the ruling National Democratic Congress (NDC).

Other victims of the Obuasi helicopter crash

Aside from Dr Murtala Mohammed, seven other Ghanaians lost their lives in the devastating helicoper crash at Obuasi on Wednesday, August 6, 2025.

Below are the names of the remaining victims:

  • Dr. Edward Omane Boamah (Minister for Defense)
  • Dr Samuel Sarpong (NDC National Vice Chairman)
  • Flying Officer Twum Ampadu
  • Samuel Aboagye (Former Parliamentary candidate)
  • Alhaji Muniru Mohammed (Acting Deputy National Security Coordinator)
  • Squadron Leader Peter Anala (Pilot)
  • Sergeant Ernest Addo Mensah.

The charred remains of the eight victims of the tragic accident were retrieved by a rescue team from the Ghana Armed Forces (GAF) and transported to Accra.

Upon receiving the remains, the government, through the Ministry of Health, sent them to South Africa for DNA analysis.

Government declares three days of mourning

Meanwhile, government has declared three days of national mourning in honour of the deceased.

The three days of national mourning began with a memorial event marked by the laying of flowers and the lighting of candles.

This solemn act of remembrance took place at the Ceremonial Garden in front of Jubilee House at 1:00 PM on Thursday, August 7, 2025.

The flower laying and candle lighting will continue on Friday, August 8, 2025, to give more citizens an opportunity to pay their respects.

The three days of national mourning will end on Saturday, August 9, 2025, with an event dubbed; "Evening of Reflections and Memorials," scheduled for 5:00 PM at the forecourt of the State House in Accra.

Reacting to this, Apostle Okai, senior pastor at the Elim Church in Accra, described the death of the eight people as unfortunate.

The man of God urged the state to support the families of the deceased.

"The state should open an account with seed money so that corporate organisations and citizens can support them," he said.

Vice President mourns demise of helicopter victims

Earlier, YEN.com.gh reported that Vice-President, Professor Jane Naana Opoku-Agyemang, expressed sorrow following the helicopter crash in Adansi Akrofuom.

The victims included five passengers, two of whom were Ministers of State, and three crew members from the Ghana Armed Forces.

Prof. Opoku-Agyemang paid tribute to the deceased, describing them as dedicated sons of the land who had served their country well.
