Former Vice President Dr Mahamudu Bawumia attended the wreath-laying ceremony in memory of the Obuasi helicopter crash victims on Friday, August 8, 2025.

The former NPP flagbearer attended the ceremony held in front of the Jubilee House in Accra with prominent members of his party, including Kojo Oppong Nkrumah, Sarah Adwoa Safo and Akosua Manu.

Officials from the current National Democratic Congress (NDC) government, like Communications Minister Sam George, Chief of Staff Julius Debrah, and Presidential Staffer Nana Yaa Jantuah, were present at the ceremony to pay their respects to the eight victims of the helicopter crash.

At the ceremony, Dr Mahamudu Bawumia wore an all-black outfit as he laid flowers and observed moments of silence for the deceased, including the two cabinet ministers, Dr Edward Omane Boamah and Dr Ibrahim Murtala Muhammed.

Bawumia consoles Julius Debrah and NDC officials

In a video seen by YEN.com.gh, Dr Mahamudu Bawumia was seen consoling and commiserating with the Chief of Staff, Julius Debrah, at the flower-laying ceremony.

The former Vice President offered a heartfelt sympathy message to the grief-stricken government officials as they conversed at the ceremony's venue.

Addressing the media at the ceremony, Dr Mahamudu Bawumia called the helicopter crash a "national tragedy" which transcended politics and offered his condolences to the government, President John Dramani Mahama, the Ghana Armed Forces and the various families of the victims.

He also assured full participation from him and the New Patriotic Party (NPP) in mourning the demise of the eight individuals.

The victims of the unfortunate incident were five political officials, including two cabinet ministers and three members of the Ghana Armed Forces.

The Defence Minister, Dr Edward Omane Boamah, the Minister of Environment, Science, and Technology, Ibrahim Murtala Mohammed, the Deputy National Security Coordinator, Limuna Muniru, the former Ashanti Regional Minister, Dr Samuel Sarpong, and the former NDC Parliamentary candidate for Obuasi East, Samuel Aboagye, were on board the helicopter when tragedy struck.

Three members of the Ghana Armed Forces, Squadron Leader Peter Bafemi Anala, Flying Officer Manin Twum-Ampadu, and Sergeant Ernest Addo Mensah, also perished in the helicopter.

The victims were en route to the official launch of the Responsible Cooperative Mining and Skills Development Programme (rCOMSDEP), an anti-Galamsey event, in Obuasi before the tragic crash.

Sam George weeps at flower-laying ceremony

In another story reported by YEN.com.gh, Sam George wept at the flower-laying ceremony at the Jubilee House on Friday, August 8, 2025.

Several mourners gathered around the Communications Minister to console him as he was overcome with grief over the loss of his colleagues, especially Dr Edward Omane Boamah, with whom he had a close relationship.

Footage of Sam George in an emotional state evoked sadness among many Ghanaians on social media.
