Ibrahim Murtala Muhammed died in a Z-9 helicopter crash in Adansi Akrofuom, the Ashanti Region, while flying to Obuasi on August 6, 2025.
He and seven others were travelling by air to the launch of the Responsible Cooperative Mining and Skills Development Programme (rCOMSDEP).

The tragic helicopter crash led to the death of all eight on board, including Defence Minister Dr Edward Omane Boamah, Acting Deputy National Security Coordinator Alhaji Muniru Mohammed, NDC Vice Chairman Samuel Sarpong, and other crew members.

Who is helicopter crash victim Murtala Muhammed?
Murtala Muhammed had his basic education in Kulikuli school in Tamale, where he schooled with the Interior Minister, Haruna Iddrisu.
The late minister was said to be from a poor background in Kulikuli, a small village, with a dream that saw him studying hard and persevering.
The politician sadly died at the age of 50. He was born and raised in the Northern Region and has been honoured for his service to Ghana.
Murtala Muhammed studied at Tamale College of Education, the University of Ghana, and Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology, earning a Master’s in Development Studies and qualifications in international relations and development planning.
He was the Minister for the Ministry of Environment and a Member of Parliament (MP) for Tamale Central. He also served as MP for Nanton in John Mahama’s first term (2013–2016).

Murtala Muhammed initially held positions in government as Deputy Minister for Information and Media Relations and Trade and Industry, before taking over the Environment, Science, Technology, and Innovation in February 2025.
He was known for advocating for anti-corruption and environmental sustainability, climate justice, and grassroots development.
On a personal level, the Late MP was a fan of reggae dancehall artiste, Stonebwoy. He was also married with three children, and kept his private life out of the public eye.
The late minister was admired for his humility, often driving himself to work and engaging openly with citizens, earning admiration across political divides.
The demise of Murtala Muhammed has been mourned as a national tragedy, with tributes showing his integrity and dedication.
On August 10, 2025, after forensic identification in South Africa was sent to Ghana electronically, his Islamic funeral (Janazah) was held at the State House in Accra, followed by burial at the Military Cemetery.
President John Mahama and other dignitaries were in attendance.

Chief Imam visits Murtala's family after crash
YEN.com.gh also reported that the National Chief Imam, Sheikh Osman Nuhu Sharubutu, visited Dr Murtala Muhammed’s family to offer condolences after the August 6, 2025, Ghana Armed Forces helicopter crash that killed eight people.
The respected Ghanaian Islamic leader and peace advocate was welcomed warmly and provided comfort to the grieving family. His visit highlighted his role in promoting unity during times of national tragedy, with some praising the kind gesture.
