The National Organiser of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Henry Nana Boakye, popularly known as Nana B, has called on the National Democratic Congress (NDC) to withdraw from the upcoming Akwatia by-election.
This appeal comes after the opposition party's decision not to contest the Tamale Central seat, a seeming gesture of goodwill following the tragic death of Dr Ibrahim Murtala Muhammed, the former MP, on August 6.

Nana B stated that a similar gesture from the NDC would be a fitting tribute to the late Dr Edward Omane Boamah, a native of the Eastern Region.

NPP's statement on Tamale Central by-election
On Monday, August 11, 2025, the NPP issued a press statement, announcing that they would not be participating in the Tamale Central by-election.
The party said its decision to withdraw from the Tamale Central by-election was out of respect for Dr Muhammed's memory and to avoid unnecessary tension and acrimony.
Explaining this further, Nana Boakye said the NPP hoped the NDC would reciprocate this goodwill gesture by abstaining from the Akwatia by-election.

NDC yet to respond to NPP's request
Meanwhile, the NDC has yet to issue an official statement in response to the request made by Nana Boakye.
However, the party has already elected Bernard Bediako Baidoo as its candidate for the Akwatia by-election, which is scheduled for September 2, 2025, following the death of Ernest Yaw Kumi, the former MP.

"It would be inhumane": NPP withdraws from Tamale Central by-election caused by Murtala Mohammed’s death
While many have praised the NPP's decision to withdraw from the Tamale Central by-election, some supporters of the NDC on social media have described it as a ruse.
They argued that the NPP knew they did not stand a chance to win the Tamale by-election, considering a difference of over 30,000 votes between them, hence the strategic move to withdraw.
The ruling party supporters also claimed that the NPP's gesture was not novel in the annals of Ghanaian politics.
They explained that the NDC had withdrawn from two previous by-elections in Ejisu and Abuakwa North following the deaths of John Kumah and Joseph Boakye Danquah Adu respectively.
