NAPO Claims NPP Big Wigs Tried to Block His Selection as Bawumia's Running Mate
- Dr Matthew Opoku Prempeh has said there were attempts to frustrate his choice as New Patriotic Party's running mate
- Prempeh reiterated his support for former Vice President Mahamudu Bawumia ahead of the NPP's flagbearer race
- The former minister claimed Bawumia was advised to drop him as the running mate for the election
The 2024 Running Mate of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Dr Matthew Opoku Prempeh, claimed some top party leaders tried to block former Vice President Dr Mahamudu Bawumia from selecting him as his running mate.
Prempeh said the former vice president stood his ground and went ahead with the decision.

Speaking in an interview on Asempa FM, Prempeh said it took Bawumia standing firm on the matter to keep him in the position.
"I am not ungrateful. Look at this big party and upon all the people who were praying for the running mate slot, he ignored all of them and made me his running mate.

"I know it was a difficult situation, but a lot of people don't know. Some bigwigs in the party went to Dr Bawumia to tell him not to make me the running mate but he ignored them. There are some names that if I mentioned, you would be shocked. Some even took him to offices to advise him against me but still he chose me."
"So, I cannot be ungrateful to him... For those who stood in the flagbearership contest, everyone knows Kennedy Agyapong is my friend, but I am still for Bawumia."
Matthew Opoku-Prempeh reaffirms support for Bawumia
In July, Prempeh declared his unflinching support for Bawumia in the flagbearer race.
Shortly after the NPP National Delegates Conference held in Accra on Saturday, July 19, 2025, Prempeh posted a picture of Kennedy Agyapong, another of the leading contenders in the flagbearer race, on his Facebook page.

This post, which came without a caption, sparked wild reactions, with many speculating that Prempeh had ditched Bawumia for Agyapong.
However, he dismissed those claims, saying he remains committed to Bawumia's bid to become the president of Ghana.
Prempeh, who is the former Member of Parliament for Manhyia South, said he could never be ungrateful to Bawumia after choosing him as his running mate for the 2024 presidential election.
So far, former Vice President Mahamudu Bawumia, Agyapong, Bryan Acheampong, Kwabena Agyapong and Dr Yaw Osei Adutwum have all picked up their nomination forms, with a few of them since filing their forms.
Bawumia tipped to win NPP flagbearer race
YEN.com.gh reported that Bawumia is tipped to win the flagbearer race of according to a poll conducted by Global InfoAnalytics.
Figures released by Global InfoAnalytics showed that Bawumia has 52% support among NPP delegates, while Agyapong, former Member of Parliament for Assin Central, had 17%.
