The president of the Ghana Football Association (GFA), Kurt Edwin Simeon-Okraku, has found himself in the middle of a heated debate after news broke of a proposal to extend the presidential term limit from two to three.
The idea, according to the GFA, follows FIFA’s approval to align Ghana’s statutes with the global body and the Confederation of African Football (CAF).

If adopted, the change could open the door for Kurt, now in his second term, to seek another four years, stretching his leadership beyond the current eight-year ceiling.
The amendment will be up for a vote when the GFA Congress meets on August 12, 2025.
Okatakyie Afrifa-Mensah blasts Kurt Okraku
While some club executives have expressed support for the proposal, others have pushed back strongly, and a few more fiercely than broadcaster and political commentator Okatakyie Afrifa-Mensah.
Speaking on his current affairs show For The Records, he accused Kurt of betraying the spirit of the statutes introduced after the Kwasi Nyantakyi era.
Afrifa-Mensah argued that the rules were crafted by the Normalisation Committee to prevent any one person from holding onto power for too long.

He went further, calling the 2nd CAF vice-president a “dictator” and alleging that back in 2019, Kurt himself supported an eight-year limit because he feared rival George Afriyie might win.
Afrifa-Mensah has vowed to oppose any attempt by Kurt to run for a third term and took a swipe at some of the country’s most prominent sports journalists, saying figures like Countryman Songo would have stood against the proposal if he had not been 'sacked' by Multimedia Group Limited.
