UEFA Super Cup: Fans Blame Coach for Costing Mohammed Kudus His First Trophy With Tottenham

  • Some Ghanaian fans have slammed Tottenham’s manager, holding him responsible for Mohammed Kudus missing out on UEFA Super Cup glory
  • Spurs squandered a 2-0 lead after Kudus was subbed off, conceding late to PSG before falling in a dramatic penalty shootout
  • The loss also denied the 25-year-old the chance to match a milestone Thomas Partey has held since 2018

Tottenham Hotspur head coach Thomas Frank has come under heavy criticism from supporters following his side’s heartbreaking loss to Paris Saint-Germain in the UEFA Super Cup at the Stadio Friuli in Udine.

Many believe a single decision cost Spurs the trophy: taking off Mohammed Kudus while he was still dominating the game.

Why fans blamed Tottenham's defeat on Thomas Frank

Up until the 79th minute, Tottenham looked in full control. Goals on either side of half-time had put them two up, and Kudus was central to everything good they were doing.

His ability to hold the ball, carry it up the pitch, and relieve pressure kept PSG at bay.

Then came the change. Frank withdrew Kudus and sent on Mathys Tel, while PSG introduced Fabian Ruiz.

The momentum shifted almost immediately. Six minutes later, Lee Kang-In pulled one back for the French side.

In stoppage time, PSG completed the comeback with a dramatic equaliser from Goncalo Ramos, according to GOAL.

The match went to penalties, but Tottenham could not recover. The reigning UEFA Champions League winners held their nerve to seal a 4-3 victory, leaving Spurs players and fans shattered, The Analyst reports.

Mohammed Kudus fires subtle dig at his former side West Ham United

"Thomas Frank didn't need to take off Mohammed Kudus that early. Spurs could barely let the ball stick afterwards and had no one to carry the ball upfield."

@takyig144 agreed:

"Oh, Owuraku, say again Tel coming in was a very wrong sub he wasn't even pressing. Sana he come spoil penalty on top."

@trapboycassido kept it short:

"That was the mistake."

@Dan_Tuffour1 was blunt:

"Unnecessary changes."

@SIRLEVI181 accused the coach of costing them silverware:

"He bottled the Cup...The Tottenham players deserved better."

For Kudus, the defeat was especially painful.

Victory would have made him only the second Ghanaian to win the UEFA Super Cup, following Thomas Partey’s triumph with Atletico Madrid in 2018 when they beat Real Madrid after extra time.

After the game, former Swedru All Blacks coach, Prince George Koffie, told YEN.com.gh:

“It’s a pity Mohammed Kudus’ brilliant display couldn’t translate into a win for Tottenham in the UEFA Super Cup. Still, there were plenty of positives to take from his performance.

"If he builds on that showing against the French giants, the sky is the limit. I believe that should Kudus maintain the same level he produced in Udine, while avoiding injuries and disciplinary setbacks, he might not be at Spurs for long; a big move could come after just one season in North London.”

Mohammed Kudus leaves Nuno Mendes chasing shadows

In a related story, YEN.com.gh detailed Mohammed Kudus’ masterclass of skill, speed, and strength that left PSG’s Nuno Mendes chasing shadows.

The Ghanaian playmaker glided past defenders with effortless flair, his quick feet slicing through PSG’s backline. However, it was his electrifying one-on-one duel with Mendes that became the game’s standout moment.
