Why Chelsea Failed in Bid to Hijack Mohammed Kudus' Tottenham Transfer
- Chelsea’s bid to land Tottenham’s £55m star Mohammed Kudus earlier this summer ended in failure
- The Ghanaian forward was a top target for the Blues, with personal terms already agreed, but a deal never materialised
- Now at Spurs, Kudus has made an immediate impact, marking his official debut with two outstanding assists
Chelsea reportedly had a £30million player-plus-cash offer for Mohammed Kudus rejected by West Ham before the Ghanaian star sealed a move to Tottenham.
Kudus joined Spurs in July and has already made a flying start, registering two assists on his Premier League debut in their 3-0 win over Burnley.

Spurs boss Thomas Frank has praised his new signing, hailing Kudus’ creativity and one-on-one ability as “top-class.”
Why Chelsea failed to sign Mohammed Kudus
It has now been revealed that Chelsea made a strong push to sign Mohammed Kudus before his move to Tottenham, but their offer was rejected by West Ham.
According to The Sun, the Ghanaian forward was one of Chelsea’s top summer targets, and personal terms with the player had already been settled.
Kudus even switched agents in June to help secure a transfer, as it became clear he would be leaving West Ham during the window.
Chelsea’s proposal included Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall, whom they valued at £30million, along with a £20m fee on top.
However, West Ham turned it down, believing Dewsbury-Hall’s value was closer to £20m, leaving the two clubs far apart in negotiations.
Although Chelsea had been close to signing Kudus in 2023 when he left Ajax, Tottenham ultimately acted decisively, submitting a £50m bid that was quickly raised to £55m.
That offer met West Ham’s demands, allowing Spurs to complete the deal and secure Kudus’ switch to north London.
Kudus shines at Tottenham after West Ham exit
West Ham and Mohammed Kudus mutually agreed to part ways this summer, with the Ghanaian forward never set to displace captain Jarrod Bowen from his preferred role on the right wing.
The £55m fee offered by Tottenham sealed the deal, ending Kudus’ stay in East London.
Chelsea had tried to include Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall in a player-plus-cash swap for Kudus, but their bid was rejected.
Ironically, Dewsbury-Hall would later be sold to Everton for around £25m, slightly below Chelsea’s £30m valuation.
Had the Blues landed Kudus, they might not have pursued Manchester United winger Alejandro Garnacho.
Since moving to north London, the 25-year-old Kudus has hit the ground running.
He produced two superb assists on his Premier League debut to inspire Spurs to a 3-0 win over Burnley, leaving Chelsea to wonder what might have been.
Tottenham now hope he continues his bright form when they face Manchester City at the Etihad this weekend.
